MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC ANALYST

SUMMARY:

  The Medical Diagnostic Analyst is responsible for determining diagnostic procedure codes 
  from patient charts and coding patient records to assist with patient billing, statistics, medical

research, and indexing of hospital records by disease and operations. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Reviews patient charts, enters chart into database to display patient information and checks biographical information for accuracy.

Reviews patient records showing diagnosis and procedure information, such as progress notes, discharge summaries, lab work, x-rays, physician notes, and radiology and autopsy reports.

Determines diagnosis codes and enters codes into database, according to order of importance. Codes records of discharged patients by referring to International Classification of Diseases Code Books, and designates medical complications causing extended hospital stays.

Writes codes on code sheets for permanent storage with patient records, prints copy of codes used, designates charges coded by initialing daily discharge census printout upon completion, makes copies, and routes to supervisor for distribution to hospital departments.

Assists in locating patient records, prints patient bills, and keeps abreast of policy and procedure changes.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

   Knowledge of medical terminology. 
   Knowledge of hospital medical diagnostic procedures and billing requirements. 
   Knowledge of applicable computer software applications.
   Ability to code medical documents. 
   Ability to determine medical diagnosis from patient charts. 
   Ability to use computer terminal and coding manuals. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of specialized training in records management or a related field; plus two years of experience in records examination, coding data, or a related area, including one year in the medical records field.

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
